How Micro-volunteering can change someone’s story

Little ideas for big impact in empowering with literacy

When we think of volunteering, many of us imagine long-term commitments or large-scale projects. This can seem daunting but did you know that even just one hour of your time can transform someone’s story? This is the power of micro-volunteering — short, flexible activities that support meaningful causes, which can often be done digitally!

One of the most impactful areas where micro-volunteering shines is literacy. Access to reading and learning opportunities can change the trajectory of a child, a family, and even an entire community. If you’ve ever wanted to help but weren’t sure how to start, here are simple, one-hour activities that can make a real difference.

1. Help Kids with Homework

You don’t need to be a professional tutor to lend a hand. Many children struggle with basic reading and writing and just one hour of homework help can boost their confidence. Whether it’s reading a story together, guiding them through testing or explaining a new word, your tutoring can plant seeds of curiosity and perseverance. Our partner Binhi English Literacy Foundation, Inc. (https://binhi.org/) is always on the lookout for both volunteers and sponsors. Message us for more information and we can coordinate your volunteer work!

2. Donate Gently Used Books

Do you have books gathering dust on your shelves? Instead of letting them sit unread, pass them forward. Research your local area and see where you can donate used books! Common places to start your search would be community libraries, children’s shelters and community daycares and local nonprofits. Remember the thrill of a good story? Let’s make sure everyone has access to going on an epic literary adventure.

3. Create Social Media Content for Nonprofits

Oftentimes, nonprofits are extremely busy doing The Work. They need all the help they can get – and if you’re a design junkie, a copywriter extraordinaire, or a social media queen (or king), you may be just who they need! It might feel a little ‘indirect’, volunteering-wise, but we all know how a well-crafted and well-timed post can bring in donors, attract more volunteers or at the very least spread the word.

Changing Stories, One Hour at a Time

Micro-volunteering reminds us that you don’t need to move mountains to create change — sometimes it’s the small actions that have the biggest impact. An hour of sharing your skills could change someone’s story for a lifetime.

Feeling inspired? We hope so and we are ready for you! Volunteer opportunities as well as corporate partnership opportunities are available at TheOneHourProject – send us a message or slide into our DMs and together let’s help others write new chapters.
