Why We Need an Ecosystem of Compassion

Kind to self, kind to people, kind to the planet is the only way.

This month, we want to highlight why we started theonehourproject (TOHP) four years ago – because we need to talk more about kindness, and get the collective action of the community to win. We at TOHP hope to empower everyone to exercise kindness even in the smallest of ways and start building a community of compassion – Madz Ortega, founder

You cannot talk sustainability to a hungry man” – was one of the first and most impactful things I learned when I started my work in the advocacy space almost a decade ago. Focused entirely on helping reforest a part of an ancestral domain, I realised I had forgotten about the people, trying to literally survive and fight for both land and culture. Taking this to heart reveals that it is almost impossible to be kind to people only because depleting the planet means to leave little and less to others – and to a whole generation. Kindness to self is also crucial – as we cannot give from an empty cup. A compassionate ecosystem is crucial and the good news is, kindness when practiced; however small, multiplies and deepens. This October, we at TheOneHourProject dive into all kinds of compassion – to self, to planet (yes to our animal friends too) and to community. Here’s to building an ecosystem of compassion one hour at a time. – Romina Nañagas, content manager
