Small Steps, Big Impact: Helping 6,000 Kids Read

How this organization is changing lives, one reader at a time and how you can help

This September, we celebrate International Literacy Day because the importance of reading and writing cannot be stressed enough. Proclaimed by UNESCO, this special day highlights the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies and promotes literacy as a fundamental human right. The ability to read and write; after all, changes lives – from accessing information and knowledge to self-expression and active participation.

We at TheOneHourProject (TOHP) are honored to work with and turn the spotlight on one of our partners, Binhi English Literacy Foundation, Inc. and their fundamental mission to provide supportive and effective learning environments and to equip every Binhi scholar with the necessary skills, resources, and guidance to boost their fluency in the English language and foster their academic growth. They know the power one can wield with access to the written word – and they’ve helped over 6,000 children start their reading journey (and you can help them reach more).

“Plant the seeds of literacy and you will harvest a lifetime of learning” – Binhi

Binhi is primarily focused on children aged 5-8 who have scored lower than 75% on standardised pre-tests (distinguished according to age level and the necessary proficiency at that age). To date, Binhi has 6,375 Binhi scholars – and that means there are now over 6,000 more children who can discover the joys of a storybook, express themselves with the written word and open the page to an entire new world of words.

Binhi also works closely with the Department of Education in the Philippines and has set up 283 classes and has physical locations through their 50 public schools and community centers.

A non-profit and non-government organisation, The foundation is able to do this fundamental work for young people through donations, corporate partnerships and the kindness of volunteers both digitally and on-ground. TOHP is deeply honored to be able to support Binhi through volunteer-reaching efforts.

Page-turning to Life-changing with Binhi: Call for Volunteers and Partners

TOHP is so grateful to our 53 volunteers to date that have shared their time, skills and effort with Binhi! To be able to proficiently and confidently read and write is life-changing and opens up a world of both stories and possibilities. But the mission is far from over and we invite you to be a part of it!

Volunteers for Binhi need not be teachers, tutors or pre-testers. The foundation also needs support in social media content-making and strategy, graphic designers and social media ambassadors to help spread the word. Donors and corporate partners are more than welcome, too. Together with Binhi, we can help turn pages and change lives, even for just an hour at a time.
