The Story of Mavell: A Writer’s Road to Accelerate Volunteerism

By Madelene Ortega, Founder of TheOneHourProject

TheOneHorProject (TOHP) is in its 3rd year! In celebration of this momentous milestone, we are putting the limelight on one of the silent heroes of TOHP  who contributed to its realization from the ground up. A witness of its humble beginnings, as it continues to make a difference, inspiring people the power of a single hour.

Mavell Macaranas-Dojillo, a mother, wife, and entrepreneur, is one of the brilliant writers for TOHP’s monthly newsletter, Good Vibes. With more than 20 years of experience in the publishing and media industries, she started as an editorial assistant and climbed her way up as an editor in a publishing company.

Working for an initiative organization was a first for Mavell. She found TOHP founder Madelene Ortega’s vision to promote ad hoc volunteering in Asia brilliant. Hence, she responded to the offer for a freelance writing job she saw in a group chat and submitted a portfolio of her articles. Not long after, she received information that she was in, and it was the start of her journey with TOHP.

Mavell shares that TOHP’s journey was not easy. They were not spared from the birth pains of managing their social networking and media platforms, searching for additional partner organizations, promoting volunteer participation, and scouting for new talents to help them amplify ad hoc volunteering in Asia. The challenge of releasing the newsletter on time due to limited manpower was also an issue they needed to deal with.

With Madelene’s steadfast desire to achieve things she puts her mind to, Mavell’s exceptional skills, and their combined hard work and dedication, they slowly began reaping the fruits of their labor.

It was through Mavell’s extensive research for non-profit organizations TOHP can partner with to bring awareness and action to their advocacy that they discovered BINHI Literacy Foundation, Inc., which remains an affiliate that helps children learn to read, speak, and spell better in English.

Furthermore, since its launch in 2021, TOHP has empowered 600 volunteers and 111 digital superheroes who have dedicated more than 990 hours to over 30 volunteer activities with its awesome partner organizations. These achievements give her a great sense of accomplishment, knowing that she is part of a once-little project that has now grown and continuously changes lives and inspires others to do the same.

Mavell continues to support TOHP in achieving its vision by using her natural talent with words to connect with her readers and inspire them to do acts of kindness despite their busy schedules.

Like her, we can reform society by using our time and skills for a good cause. Visit the TOHP website for available volunteer opportunities across Asia and take part in promoting an advocacy you are passionate about. Collaborate with us and together let us make a difference and build a caring community, one hour at a time.
