We know how our demanding schedules and digital distractions can make volunteering seem impossible. This March, we sat down with Manuel Denoual, a French expat in Singapore, who shared how he discovered the power of flexible, one-hour volunteering.
Manuel is very thankful to live a fruitful life. “I’m French, in my 40s, married, and a proud dad of two wonderful girls,” he begins. “I’ve always considered myself incredibly privileged to have been born in France and to have the life I’ve enjoyed so far. I’ve travelled the world, lived in different cities, started a family, built a successful career, and met incredible people along the way.”
For Manuel, contributing to the public good has been a life-long commitment. He recalls, “Since my teenage years, I’ve been involved in multiple volunteering initiatives and supported various charities. So when I heard about TheOneHourProject (TOHP) and its mission through a friend, I knew I had to get involved.”
His volunteer shifts are as dynamic as his professional background. Manuel leverages his experience in business development and integrated marketing to help non-profits increase their results. “I’m really enjoying volunteering for TOHP as it allows me to apply my professional expertise to help non-profits raise awareness for the causes they champion and secure funding.”
One such cause close to Manuel’s heart is addressing climate challenges. His professional skills found practical application when he coached a team that participated in the Climate Hack 2024 competition.
Manuel narrates, “I shared insights on building a go-to-market strategy and best practices for delivering compelling pitch presentations.” To Manuel, this was more than just sharing professional knowledge; it contributed to an advocacy he truly cares about.
Ad-hoc volunteering fits the busy schedules of millennials and Gen Zs. Manuel narrates, “With TOHP, volunteers have the flexibility to participate whenever it suits them and for as much time as they can allocate in a given week.” He adds, “One hour may seem insignificant but it has the potential to change the course of a non-profit and create a meaningful effect to society.”
Manuel also testifies to the benefits of giving back. “It’s a personally enriching experience that not only brings fulfillment but also helps me further develop my professional skills and my network,” he reveals. After pausing to serve his community due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he’s thrilled to be back and contribute to the country that has welcomed him and his family.
For those hesitant to offer their services to philanthropy, Manuel offers simple yet powerful advice: “TOHP provides the perfect opportunity for someone who has never volunteered before to take the leap and dedicate their first hour to making a positive influence.” He shares, “They offer fantastic support, preparing participants for each session, following up with nonprofits, and skillfully managing multiple schedules. Volunteers are never left on their own and are always placed in the best environment to maximize their impact within the hour they contribute.”
He also highlights the importance of connecting diverse individuals with the right causes. Manuel explains, “We often hear about the challenges and social issues affecting the region, but there are countless grassroots initiatives led by individuals and nonprofits making a real difference despite limited resources. TOHP amplifies these efforts by connecting them with skilled professionals willing to dedicate their time to help them grow and thrive.”
Manuel’s message is clear: “One hour is all it takes to make a difference!”
