Finding the Fuel: TheOneHourProject Founder Finds Inspiration in Purpose and Community

By Erica Luna

This June, as we raise the rainbow flag for Pride Month and turn our spotlight to a narrative that embodies resilience, strength, and the power of people working together. It’s the evolution of TheOneHourProject (TOHP) and its founder, Madelene Ortega, a digital leader with a remarkable vision. In the second to the last portion of this interview series, we ask Madelene how she is advocating empowerment despite all the trials that she and her organization faces every day.

“When we started TOHP, we were a small community initiative and a very lean team with no existing connection to any nonprofits,” she recounts. The early days of TOHP were a masterclass in perseverance. “We had to email over a hundred nonprofits to offer support and probably got five responses,” Madelene narrates. This anecdote, though seemingly discouraging, is in fact, a testament to Madelene’s determination. Undeterred, they actively researched and connected with nonprofits struggling with volunteer recruitment and digital marketing needs. It was a slow and meticulous process, but it laid the foundation for TOHP’s remarkable trajectory.

There was a need for a bridge between organizations yearning for assistance and busy individuals brimming with talent and a desire to give back. This insight became the cornerstone of TOHP’s goal: to provide nonprofits with invaluable support in digital marketing, design, and social media initiatives.

However, leading a volunteer organization, especially one that thrives on limited time commitments, presents unique challenges. TOHP embraces an “ad-hoc” volunteer model, acknowledging the reality of our fast-paced lives. “We always need to respect this,” Madelene emphasizes. “All we ask is for advanced communication if they’re unable to participate in an activity.” However, encountering no-shows or “ghosting” can be frustrating but Madelene’s unwavering spirit shines through. “In this situation, we roll up our sleeves and find alternative solutions for our partners,” she declares.

So, where does a leader like Madelene, juggling multiple roles and facing unexpected hurdles, find the fuel to keep going? Madelene reveals, “I always focus on our why and our impact on our communities. When you are clear on what you want to achieve, juggling a few roles and managing a thousand tasks is easier.” She also shares two of her secret weapons, “First, I have a strong team that is equally passionate about what we are doing, which greatly helps. I also surround myself with people who give me energy and inspiration.”

The legacy of Madelene and TOHP transcends the act of volunteerism. It’s about fostering a movement, a space where individuals champion not only the organizations they serve but also one another. Madelene’s journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for anyone harboring a desire to make a difference. It demonstrates that even with limited resources and time, a single spark can ignite a ripple effect of positive change.

You could be the “Digital Superhero” that we are looking for. Remember, every minute and every hour counts.
